ASA's Unreal Engine 5.8 upgrade slips to November 5: what players and cluster owners need to know

Wildcard has moved ASA's Unreal Engine 5.8 upgrade from October 28 to November 5, the same day as the Giganotosaurus TLC and the Enigmasaur. Here is what is confirmed, what is still open, and how server owners should prepare.

ASA's Unreal Engine 5.8 upgrade slips to November 5: what players and cluster owners need to know

What's coming on November 5

Community Crunch 529 (published October 24 on survivetheark.com) sets a new target date for the move of ARK: Survival Ascended to Unreal Engine 5.8: November 5. CC 529 also says the Giganotosaurus TLC arrives that day with the Enigmasaur, the final creature of Fantastic Tames Season 1.

One caveat on the date. The CC 529 article gives November 5, but other sections of the same page still say November 6. CC 528 also said the Enigmasaur "will wrap up ARK Fantastic Tames Season 1 on November 6th". Until patch notes are out, expect the engine upgrade on November 5 and treat the creature content as November 5 or 6.

Why it was delayed

Getting here took several steps:

  • December 2025: the plan was Unreal Engine 5.7, which co-founder Jeremy Stieglitz expected by the end of March 2026 (PCGamesN, Wccftech).
  • August 22 (CC 520): Wildcard announced Unreal Engine 5.8 instead, planned for September 30 with the Therizino TLC, Cerberax and Gargantar. Community Crunch 520 gave no reason for the switch.
  • September 26 (CC 525): the release was split into phases. The creatures shipped on September 30, a Steam-only test server (PTR) opened on October 5, and the full upgrade was set for October 28.
  • October 17 (CC 528): October 28 was still the official date.
  • October 24 (CC 529): the upgrade moved to November 5. Wildcard credited feedback from the test server and said:
a few lingering issues need just a bit more time in the oven

What changes for players

Wildcard has named two GPU optimizations, which it says gave the largest gains in its internal testing:

  • Nanite Voxel Culling renders distant foliage more efficiently using a voxel representation. Wildcard says: "Our intention is to have Nanite voxel culling enabled on all platforms."
  • Lumen Lite is a lighter lighting system that uses probes placed around the camera. Wildcard expects the biggest gains on consoles, lower-end PCs and low graphics presets.

Keep expectations realistic. The first PTR build did not include either feature. CC 527 said "We're aiming to add both in an update early next week", and CC 528 announced a PTR update focused on GPU optimizations. We found no patch notes confirming that either feature is in the build, so neither is confirmed for November 5.

The often-quoted performance figure comes from a December 2025 interview about the earlier 5.7 plan. Stieglitz expected "about another 30 to 40% on both the GPU and the CPU" (Wccftech), a number that combined the 5.6 optimizations with the planned 5.7 features. PCGamesN's report of the same interview says "about a third". It was a developer estimate, not a promise for 5.8, and Stieglitz said even then that stutters would not go away completely. Wildcard has not published any benchmarks for 5.8.

Mods: according to CC 529, 99.9% of mods have been rebuilt and checked for 5.8, and about 10 special cases remain. CC 525 said modding reopens, and the list of mods needing author action is published, on launch day; Wildcard has not restated this for November 5.

What server owners and cluster admins should do

CC 525 says the full update launches on all platforms; Wildcard has not given a release time. Wildcard's PTR guide says upgraded saves will likely not work on the old live version (via Space-node). It has not said anything about downtime or wipes for unofficial servers. The advice below comes from hosting providers and past ASA updates, not from Wildcard.

  • Back up before November 5. Run saveworld, then copy ShooterGame/Saved and your cluster transfer folder. Since an upgraded save probably cannot go back to the old version, this copy is your only way back.
  • Update quickly. As Space-node puts it, "Players can only join a server that runs the same version as their game." If you self-host, the dedicated server is SteamCMD app 2430930.
  • Check your mods. Compare your mod IDs against the CurseForge list of mods that need author action when it is published. Removing a content mod can delete its content from the world when the server saves.
  • Read the start log before you open the server to players. If you can, record your server performance (TPS) beforehand so you can compare.
  • Fear Ascended runs from October 28 to November 11. On private servers it needs -mods=877752.

No forced wipe has been announced. Whether you start a new season around the upgrade is up to you. Two things happening at the same time are not part of the upgrade: inactive official servers across several maps will be marked "SUNSET" on November 29 and removed from Favorites (Wildcard says saves will be offered via Nitrado later), and ARKpocalypse wipes next on November 13.

What about ARK Maker?

ARK Maker, the in-game world builder that Jeremy Stieglitz discussed at GDC 2026 as "World Creator" (80.lv interview), was revealed under its new name at IGN Live in June. At IGN Live, Studio Wildcard put ARK Maker in Q3 2026 (per PCGamesN); the written press release gave no date. Q3 has now passed without a release. None of the recent Community Crunches we checked mention ARK Maker. We found no official statement linking it to the engine upgrade, so it should not be expected on November 5.

Planning a fresh season?

Many clusters time new seasons around big updates. Check the arkwipe Wipelist to see which clusters are starting fresh around November 5. If you run a cluster, add your date there too.
